The demanding nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the biggest surprises for new trainees. After just a few minutes of rolling, a lot of strong and athletic people get exhausted.
Most of the time, fitness is not the issue. It’s breathing.
When resisting submissions, escaping situations, or using techniques, beginners frequently hold their breath. The body tenses up and expends energy far more quickly as a result.
Even in stressful situations, skilled grapplers learn to remain composed and breathe steadily. This enables people to save energy and think more clearly in trying circumstances.
Additionally, proper breathing enhances technique. Compared to tense muscles, relaxed muscles move more effectively and respond faster. while you’re calm, many procedures that seem impossible while you’re tired suddenly become considerably easier.
One of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s hidden skills is learning how to breathe under pressure. Although it is rarely taught explicitly, all skilled practitioners gradually acquire it.
Being able to maintain composure and regulate your breathing is beneficial outside of the mats. Many students discover that it affects their career, education, athletic endeavors, and stressful circumstances in daily life.
In Jiu-Jitsu, strength and fitness are useful tools, but breathing is the cornerstone that makes those tools function.
Sometimes a student’s strength or speed does not distinguish them from an advanced learner.
It’s just who can maintain composure long enough to breathe again.
